FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What rank should I be to attend?
A: All ranks are welcome, even beginners. However, the classes will not be broken out by beginner/regular/advanced, so you will be training with all levels and be exposed to very advanced concepts.

Q: Why isn't dinner included?
A: There is a lot to do and see in the San Francisco Bay Area. We wanted to give you time to explore your surroundings and get out of the hotel if you want to. If you want to stay at the hotel, the restaurant has wonderful food at an affordable price ($15-$20). If you want to explore, the hotel has a free shuttle to downtown Berkeley and a paid water taxi to San Francisco. Dinners out can be anywhere from $10-$40.

Q: Can I stay for additional nights at the hotel?
A: Yes. The full and deluxe packages include Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights only. To stay additional days, we will be sending out a link for you to reserve which days you would like to stay and pay the hotel directly, at a negotiated discounted rate of $200 a night.

Q: What are the beds in the rooms like?
A: Each room has 2 Queen beds and we will put one person in each bed. If you are a couple, please let us know so we can upgrade you to a King bed if preferred and we will do our best to accommodate you. In order to save money, we did not pay extra for the "ocean view" rooms. The windows still look out at pretty surroundings!

Q: Will there be a party?
A: Of course! We are looking into options and will sell the tickets later when we have details for you. It will be Saturday night.

Q: Is there a bar?
A: Yes. The hotel bar is open until 2am. Bring cash or credit.

Q: What will the weather be like?
A: Hot. 27°-32° Celsius (80° -90° F). Bring sunscreen.

Q: Hot enough to swim in the ocean?
A: No. The event is on the San Francisco Bay, which is cold and not good for swimming. The ocean is about one hour away and is *very* cold. There is a swimming pool at the hotel, however, and swimming is encouraged during pool hours between 5:00am-11:00pm.

Q: Will we train outside?
A: Yes. We have a ballroom for group sessions and it divides up into smaller rooms for breakout sessions. At the instructor's discretion, breakout sessions may be conducted outside on the hotel lawn or at the park across the street.

Q: Do we need weapons?
A: Please bring as many weapons as you can. Local buyu will bring as many as we can to share, but still, bring what you can. Minimum: Tanto. Great: Tanto, Hanbo, Bokken, Shinai, Bo. Do not bring any live blades.

Q: Can I bring my partner if he/she does not train?
A: Yes. I recommend you get a Deluxe package (private room) so your partner can stay with you and just buy their own food. They cannot come and watch the training sessions, however.

Q: With the Full/Deluxe packages, how many nights are included in the hotel?
A: Friday night and Saturday night are included. If you want to stay additional days, we will follow up with a link to book these rooms with the hotel.

Q: Why didn't you recommend to stay in Oakland?
A: Oakland is lovely, and you can absolutely stay there if you would like to. However, there are some areas that are not safe, and if you don't know which ones are safe and which are not, it's just better to stay in Berkeley.

Q: Is there parking?
A: The hotel has a large parking lot. Parking is free if you are staying at the hotel and $20/day if you are not. There is also free parking available along the street.

Q: What if I can't afford the training costs?
A: If you would like to help out and volunteer at the event, we can work out a discount. Also, there are some dojos that are creating "scholarships" for their students to sponsor them. Reach out to your community. Also - if you want to pay in installments, contact becca@bujinkankunoichi.com with your preferred package, and I will email you a link you can set up monthly payments.

Q: Can I train for just one day?
A: Yes. Friday will be $75, Saturday $150 and Sunday $125. Just come and pay at the door for that day. Lunch is not included.

Q: Is there any chance the event will change dates again?
A: No. We have signed a contract with the hotel.

Q: Is there any chance the event will be canceled?
A: The event will be canceled and refunds provided in full if not enough people register in advance to cover the costs of purchasing instructor flights. This announcement would be made in January of 2016 if so. Please register as soon as you can so we can afford to fly these amazing women in!

Q: How much are instructors getting paid?
A: The instructors have agreed to teach for their travel expenses only. If any profit is made in selling tickets, the profit will be divided equally between them.
